Makeup artists at the spring 2017 fashion shows embraced pops of opaque color—and bright and bedazzled lips. Daring? Yes. Will you get stares from passers-by? Yes—and we say: Bring it on! Here’s how to make the runway’s bold lip work for you in the real world.
From matte red lips at Giambattista Valli and hot pink at Bibhu Mohapatra, to striking orange at Versus and shocking matte blue at Thom Browne, gutsy lip color should be your go-to look from now until fall. The best way to wear such a bold color is as most models did on the runway—bare-faced. Use a tinted BB or CC cream to even out the skin tone, and complete the look with a pair of fabulous and oversized sunnies.
In addition to using single swatches of vibrant color on the lips, makeup artists got creative with their color-blocking techniques. At Cushnie et Ochs, models sported a two-toned pout in which the top lip was cherry and the bottom lip was magenta. Artists at Jason Wu applied a fluorescent red to lips, then layered on neon orange to the center of the bottom lip. To make this dramatic look work in real life, gently blot your lips together once to blend the colors, though not completely. Or go big, and wear the look as originally intended!
Sparkly lips were on full display at the shows in the form of chunky rose-gold glitter (Fendi); a crescendo of chocolate-brown glitter (DKNY); and cobalt and baby blue glitter, with some models’ cupid’s bows traced with silver liner (Maison Margiela). There are several lip glitter kits on the market if you want to go all out, but you can also DIY this look with lipstick and fine craft glitter applied with a cotton swab. The perfect accompaniment to such a daring look? Glowing skin, of course.
