Once summer is here, it’s amazing how quickly your calendar fills up with beach days, backyard barbecues, and other fun things to do outside. But sweltering heat also means it’s time to make some adjustments to your skincare routine to avoid feeling like you’re melting. You still want to look glam on those hot summer days, when the only makeup color you’re sporting is a bold lip, right? Here’s how to get that glow.
Switch to a moisturizing serum.
A heavy skin cream isn’t going to cut it on high-humidity days, but your skin still needs hydration, and help keeping lines and wrinkles at bay. Swap in a lightweight antiaging serum or gel that doesn’t feel like an extra layer sitting on your skin. Apply morning and night after cleansing.
Wear a natural sunscreen.
To keep from baking in the sun, choose a mineral sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients are far better for you than chemical-based options. Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) compiles a list of the safest sunscreen products, so check this out before stocking up for the summer.
About that sunscreen…
Because the safest sunscreens are designed to be opaque (not cute), they can be tough to rinse off at the end of the day. Leftover product is a recipe for breakouts, so be diligent about cleansing (Marie Veronique Daily Exfoliating Cleanser is a great nontoxic product that dissolves impurities with alpha and beta hydroxy acids). Also, a natural hydrating toner with witch hazel, like EiR NYC Sunblock Remover, can be a lifesaver.
Use blotting papers.
There’s dewy. And then there’s downright drippy. Tamp down excessive shine with all-natural blotting sheets, such as fragrance-free Tatcha Japanese Beauty Papers, made of absorbent abaca leaf and super-fancy gold flakes. You’ve got this summer handled.
